Use an old book to make an expandable file with personality.
An old book is perfect for this project but it must be an appropriate size for the folder. The folders aren't available in that many sizes but you can usually find large as well as small ones. You'll find the expandable files at office supply stores and some discount department stores. Remove the stretchy band that holds the file closed.
There are various books you can use to hide a set of expandable folders. One is a book with regular pages. Cut them out, using a craft knife, until you have nothing but the front and back cover and the spine - all in one piece. Another book you can use is a three-ring binder. This type of book is ideal but it's tricky to remove the ring hardware. It basically has to be pried off and some minor damage can occur. You can, however, cover the hardware area - damaged or not - with wide, colored tape.
Open the book and lay it out flat. prepare the file folder by applying adhesive all over the front and back, but not the bottom. Set the bottom of the file on the binding of the book, then press the front of the book to the front of the folder, and the back of the book against the back of the file folder. Clamp or otherwise hold them in place until the adhesive sets.
If you want to attach a band that holds the book and file closed, do so before gluing the expandable file inside the book covers. Drill a hole in the back of the book, and place the two ends from a cut hair band into the hole. Just make sure the band is a good fit for the book before attaching it permanently. Your desk or other area will look much nicer when you have book files instead of those cheap cardboard numbers.
