I can't think of a better gift to share with a child than the love of gardening. Here are a few tips on how to garden with kids.
Gardening with kids should be fun. Start with the proper tools. Child size gardening gloves come in all sorts of colors, don't cost a lot of money and make the child feel like Mom or Dad working in the garden. Adult size tool are too cumbersome and heavy for children, so consider purchasing a few child size tools. They will be easier for the child to use and teaches responsibility in caring for their own tools.
The National Gardening Association has a catalog for kids in the garden "stuff" at www.kidsgardening.org .This is also a great site for all kids of information about gardening with kids as a family , community or school. They even offer grants to community and school gardening projects. Check it out.
Many gardeners keep a journal from year to year listing when they planted what and how it did in the garden. This is a good thing to do and kids can make their own garden journal and decorate it or purchase ," A Gardening Journal Just for Kids", for $5.95 from the National Gardening Associations site mentioned above.
Check with your state's local extension office to see what information they have on gardening with kids. Set boundaries with the kids before shopping for seeds and plants. Adult gardeners have a hard enough time limiting the number of plants and seed they buy when visiting a nursery or shopping the seed catalogs.
When gardening with kids plant a variety including vegetables, flowers and an herb or two. Plant both seeds and plants that have different maturity dates. One doesn't want to have to wait all summer to harvest. Plant lettuce, broccoli or onions for spring, tomatoes, sunflowers and watermelon for summer harvest and pumpkins or gourds for fall. Plant veggies the kids like to eat, try veggies in different colors like purple carrots, and always try at least one vegetable or fruit that is new. Nothing will temp a child into trying a new food, than growing it his or herself.
Gardening with children is fun and rewarding for you and your child. It is a gift to your child, not only today but a gift that will last forever.
