How to Fix the Spray on a Pump Sprayer
Simple instructions for flushing out the sprayer nozzle assembly
Because I draw my gardening water from a well, my pump sprayer clogs up quite regularly with tiny bits of rust or other minerals. When this happens, the spray either shoots to the side or barely comes out of the nozzle tip at all. If you are having trouble with the spray on your pump sprayer, you will be happy to learn unclogging the wand assembly is usually an easy do-it-yourself repair. To prevent risk of accidental poisoning if working with a full pump sprayer tank, be sure to wear latex gloves and protective goggles.
1. Release air pressure from the tank. This prevents chemicals from backing up through the wand assembly.
2. Unscrew the wand assembly from the tank. The wand assembly consists of several parts; a flexible rubber hose, a siphon tube that connects to the base of the hose (and rests inside the tank), the wand, and a nozzle assembly. All these pieces can be taken apart by rotating each of connecting plastic nuts counter-clockwise.
TIP: To help me keep track of how the pieces are to be reassembled, I'll place the parts in order on my work table as they are removed.
3. Individually rinse out all five pieces. Using either a hose or a bathtub faucet, rinse out each of the 5 pieces to remove any obstructions. For the two pieces of the nozzle assembly, it may require a tweezers to remove debris trapped in the openings.
4. Reassemble the wand assembly. Once the parts have been cleaned out, reassemble the pieces and reconnect the hose tightly to the tank. Re-pressurize the tank to test the nozzle stream.
Did you know that nozzle tips are adjustable? If your nozzle tip is still not working properly, rotating the tip one to two turns to the left will allow more water to pass through the nozzle opening.
