How to Repair a Kitchen Sink’s Spray Nozzle Attachment
This article briefly discusses how to identify and correct problems associated with a kitchen sink's spray nozzle attachment.
Is your kitchen sink's spray nozzle on the fritz? If so, you may want to try and solve the problem yourself. Based on my experience, it will take you roughly 30 minutes or less to identify and correct the problem. Here's how to do it:
Supplies Needed
In order to address your kitchen sink's spray nozzle problem, you will need an eyeglass screwdriver ($3), a roll of duct tape, a pair of locking pliers ($17), a basin wrench ($16), an old toothbrush and a box of toothpicks. You may also want to have an extra aerator ($4), a spray head ($8) and a reinforced hose ($30) on hand just in case you discover that a part needs to be replaced.
Inspect the Aerator
Start by shutting off the water that runs to the spray nozzle. Once that's done, take out a pair of locking pliers and a roll of duct tape. Duct tape the locking pliers' jaws so they will not harm the aerator's finish during use. Continue by using the pliers to free the aerator from the spray head.
Based on my experience, most aerators consist of screens, washers and perforated discs. Minerals and other debris can cause the screens and discs to become clogged. Once the aerator has been removed, disassemble it and place the parts onto your work surface in the order and orientation of disassembly. Afterward, inspect the aerator's parts.
If you find residue on the aerator's screens and discs, gently remove it with a tooth brush and toothpicks. You'll also want to inspect the aerator's washers for signs of wear and tear. If any of the aerator's parts appear to be in poor condition, go ahead and replace them at this time. Afterward, reassemble the aerator and set it in a safe spot while you continue the troubleshooting process.
Inspect the Spray Head
Next, you'll want to turn your attention towards the spray head. Remove the spray head from the coupling. Then separate the reinforced hose from the coupling by removing the snap ring. I have found that an eyeglass screwdriver is helpful in getting the snap ring to move.
Once that's done, you'll also need to take apart the spray head. Most spray heads contain washers, screens and perforated discs. Using the tooth picks and a tooth brush, remove any debris from the screens and discs. If any of the washers appear worn, replace them. At this point, reconnect the aerator to the spray nozzle and set it aside.
Inspect the Hose
Proceed by inspecting the hose itself and the coupling for potential blockages. Remove any obstructions that you may find with forced air or water. If the obstruction is located too deep within the hose, you may need to remove the hose from the sink and replace it altogether.
In order to do that, you'll need to loosen the hex nut that connects the hose to the spout attachment. It is located under the sink and you'll need a basin wrench to get the job done. After you remove the old hose, go ahead and attach the new one. Continue by reattaching the coupling and the spray head.
Turn the water supply back on and check to see if the problem has been corrected. If it hasn't, there is a good chance that the problem with your spray nozzle has to do with your kitchen faucet's diverter valve. Turn the water supply to your kitchen sink back off. You'll need to switch gears now and focus on accessing the diverter valve. It is located inside your kitchen sink's spout.
Inspect the Diverter Valve
Depending on your faucet's set up, you may need to remove several screws, nuts and caps in order to get inside the spout. Once you are inside the spout, locate and remove the diverter valve. If you don't know what a diverter valve looks like, look for a brass screw. In most instances, the diverter valve is located underneath the brass screw.
Remove the diverter valve and carefully clean it. Afterward, reinstall the diverter valve and reassemble the spout. Turn the water supply back on and test the spray nozzle once more. If it still doesn't work, you'll want to turn the water back off, remove and replace the diverter valve with a new one. Doing so should solve your kitchen sink's spray nozzle problem.
