How to Repair Lawn Sprinklers
Sarasota sprinkler system repair tasks and sprinkler head repair are not as hard as some would have you believe. If you can change a light bulb, you can change a sprinkler head, as they are both threaded connections.
Both soil and some turf types gain a slight height level from when the original Sarasota lawn irrigation system was first installed. Some turf types, such as Saint Augustine grass, will cause the sprinkler nozzle to be blocked by the grass blades due to thatch growth. Within two years of installation, a four inch pop-up in some turf will be too low to properly water the grass.
A six inch pop-up will serve your turf for a longer period of time. Due to the two extra inches in body height, plus the two extra inches in barrel height, a six inch pop-up should perform five to six years before the sprinkler head would need to be raised to meet the requirements of the increased turf height.
Performing Sarasota sprinkler repair is not difficult. The first thing you need to do is to dig a hole around the sprinkler head. Leave yourself a large workspace by digging an area the size of a pie plate around the sprinkler head. The reason for this is that working in a tight space increases the chance of dirt falling into the pipe. You'll save yourself a lot of frustration by digging the hole a little bigger to prevent that problem.
Once you have sufficiently excavated the area around the sprinkler head, turn the old sprinkler head counter-clock-wise until the head unscrews. CAUTION: you may want to dig an area about the size of a soft drink can to the side and underneath the sprinkler head to provide an area to bail any muddy water entering your work area from the irrigation pipe. A clean connection is important and these simple steps can add to your success.
After the sprinkler head has been removed and there is no danger of dirt or mud coming into the exposed pipe area, make note of how the sprinkler head was originally attached to the pipe.
There are two basic ways to connect the sprinkler head to a pipe. All sprinkler heads are female thread connections. But, not all connections to the pipe are "male" connections.
You may have a female connection with a "nipple," which is a small threaded piece of pipe that enables you to connect two female connections together. If you have a male connection to the sprinkler head, then you will need a female-by-male riser extension. These come in either schedule 40 PVC or as poly cut off nipples. Poly cut off nipples are easier to work with because you can use scissors or a PVC cutter to make the correct cut for the height you need.
Depending on the type of connection that you have to work with, you are trying to raise the top of the sprinkler head to an acceptable level so that when the barrel comes out of the sprinkler head, it will clear the blades of the grass and put the water where you want it.
