Deer Are Deadly for Your Garden!
Living in an area over-populated with feral deer, deck/pot gardening, especially of roses, is the only viable option. Just about everything (excepting Juniper and Bottle-Brush) is salad bar to the deer - the roses and rose buds are desert! Be sure to keep the gate closed.
Deer are voracious eaters. They eat nearly every and any growing thing (including poison oak, ivy and sumac) that they can get to - So, if you yearn to grow flowers or edible fruits in an area populated by deer who have become so completely acculturated to living in and around human neighborhoods that they walk down the streets, sidewalks and yards with complete abandon and with no obvious fear of humans or cars, you will need to consider the option of protected deck/pot gardening.
Even that won't work if you leave the gate to your deck open - as I once did for about three minutes. I was alerted to my oversight when I heard hooves on the deck and walked out to find two large bucks happily polishing off the last of a year's worth of plantings of various plants. I approached them, without thinking, in anger - and, luckily for me, they jumped over the deck fence and ran. (They generally will not jump over a fence to get to your plants - but they will jump over one to escape a perceived danger.)
Growing plants in large ceramic pots can work very nicely but it is not the same as growing them in the open ground. For example, they need a lot more water as it evaporates from the pot surfaces as well as from the soil surface and the leaves of the plant. More regular fertilization is needed because the more naturally occurring nutrients are not automatically present. What is in the pot - soil, fertilizer and plant - is essentially what you put into it. The plants seem more vulnerable to both insect and fungus attack. I am not a trained horticulturist so I don't understand why this is - but it sure is. So regular treatment for these potential catastrophes is necessary. Both can be achieved organically without poisoning your growing things or, of you are growing food, your own food supply. Lady bugs, for example, do a magnificent job of consuming aphids from roses and other plants. Many organic anti-fungus preparations are available at any well-equipped garden store.
The pots should be as large as you can manage - and until the plants come to full-size, it will look like the pots are too big. But, they are not. Remember that the plants need lots of room to grow - both above and below ground level. Using these techniques, I have successfully cultivated many varieties of roses, tomatoes and annuals. Once in a while I see a family of deer walk by the deck and glance longingly, albeit briefly, at what they can't get to. The mistake I made once, I am not apt to make again. So, plentiful deer, so sweet and cute to observe, do not prevent you from cultivating a satisfying garden - but do cause you to have to re-conceptualize it as a contained, protected and potted activity.
We humans are the ones who must adapt. We are reportedly pretty good at that.
