Tips to Stop Animals From Eating Your Vegetable Garden

Ideas for how to deal with animals that destroy vegetables.

Squirrels and chipmunks usually dig and plant strange seeds in your garden. This can be frustrating in the spring or each time you plant new seeds. In the process of their work they tend to undo your work. Personally, I have learned to deal with the squirrels and chipmunks. Trying to fend them off is just too expensive and frustrating.

Rabbits, on the other hand, destroy. This probably wouldn't upset me because plants often grow back but I often find a flower bud or new bean plant bit off and spit out by our not-so-cute-anymore rabbits. The least they could do was eat what they pick.

I have tried numerous techniques to fend off the attackers. It was war. I tried the sprays first thinking that this process was the least offensive until I saw the price compared to the square footage the spray covered. I purchased a couple different kinds to try regardless of the sticker shock. Deer Off and Repel-ex are what I tried.

The smell of each spray was offensive. If you have success with sprays be sure to wear gloves, cloths you plan to wash immediately (wash with a can of Coke-it eliminates the odor), safety glasses and be sure it is not windy. Because the sprays use taste and odor to offend, do not spray directly on your food or in places kids go. Find a perimeter and spray that. I found the sprays to be short lived, except during a drought. Rain washes the spray away. After talking with many other gardeners who have tried the sprays I have come to the conclusion that the success rate of the spray depends on your location. Period. Don't hesitate to try it in your yard. Some rabbits hate the sprays while others don't and go right through them.

Fences are another way to keep rabbits at bay. I have found two techniques to work. One technique is fencing your entire yard. When using this technique be sure to remember that rabbits can dig and chew. It is a good idea to dig six to twelve inches into the ground. Bury chicken wire then attach the chicken wire to the fence above ground. Above ground make sure the openings in your fence do not exceed one inch. Baby rabbits can fit through surprisingly small spaces. The biggest downfall to this technique is if a rabbit gets into your yard it is hard to get out. Also, it is a lot of work.

Another fencing technique fences directly around the plant or vegetable patch. Again, be sure the openings are not larger than one inch. Be sure to bury at least six inches of fence. Remember, rabbits can jump over two feet without breaking a sweat. In the winter rabbits will simply walk on the snow to get over the fence. Be sure the fence is tall enough. I often place a piece of chicken wire fence over the plant. Be sure to envelope the entire plant for any part of the plant not protected may get eaten. The biggest downfall to this is aesthetics. Who likes to look at chicken wire? You could also use bird netting. It is harder to see and does a pretty good job. I have known rabbits to chew on it but they rarely get through to the plant. Rabbits can be lazy.

In my yard, live traps work the best. We have permission from a friend who lives outside the city to let the rabbits go on their property. In my fifteen years of gardening and design experience, elimination of the competition works the best with rabbits.

Good luck growing a vegetable garden in the city. And remember, every gardener has their own gardening ways. What will yours be?
