How to Take a Soil Sample
Magazine articles and handbooks on lawn care and gardening frequently make general recommendations for applying lime and fertilizer to garden and lawn areas.
Samples from home gardens and lawns, golf courses, parks, athletic fields, commercial greenhouses, fruits, and ornamental will be tested under the new program rather than through the field crop program as in the past. Topsoil, black dirt, muck, and peat will also be tested.
A computer will be used to analyze the soil test data and make lime and fertilizer recommendations. The soil test includes pH or acidity, lime requirement, organic matter, available phosphorus, available potassium, and soluble salts.
Here are a few of the questions a backyard gardener will face when taking a soil sample.
When is the best time to take a soil sample?
Although you can sample any time that is convenient, certain times are better than others. For example, garden soil samples should be sent to the lab far enough in advance of planting so that yon can make the necessary corrections before planting. The same is true of new lawns that are being established.
On the other hand, you can sample soil from existing turf at any convenient time. Just remember that it usually takes the soil testing lab two weeks to process the sample.
From where in the lawn should I take the sample?
To be sure the soil sample represents the general soil conditions of the lawn or garden, you need to make a composite sample. You do this by collecting small cores of soil from at least five random locations in the sampling area, combining them into one sample. Do not include soil from a lawn area and a garden area in the sample composite sample.
How often should the soil be tested?
Soils from lawns should be sampled about every three years even though fertilizer is applied every year. Sample trouble spots as they occur and send in for testing. Test garden soils every other year for maximum production.
How do you take a soil sample?
A sampling probe or auger is recommended. There are many local suppliers where sampling probes can be purchased or you can make one out, of the hollow shaft of a broken golf club. You need to sample gardens and soil that is to be used for establishing a lawn to the depth of tillage. Sample established lawns to a depth of 6 inches. Discard the surface mat of grass above the soil.
What should be done with the sample after it is collected?
The soil samples can be turned in at the University Extension office in your county for forwarding to the soil testing lab.
