Yard and Garden Resolutions for 2020
Checklist for the yard and garden 2020: Start a raised garden bed for year round organic vegetables. Don't forget the last frost date so I don't miss planting tomatoes like I did last year. Find new ways to avoid weeding and raking.
Winter is a great time to see the bones and structure of your yard or garden. The leaves are gone and it's easy to see what needs to be enhanced or camouflaged.
Resolution #1: Add two or three arborvitaes at the back of my property to screen the view to the neighbor's backyard.
Resolution #2: Prepare the natural areas against weeds. On a sunny day, plan to use up the rest of my lightweight dual-layered landscape fabric and left over bales of pine needles. The fabric I use works great for weed control because roots never get stuck in the fabric -get it at WalMart's garden center.Cover it with a couple of inches of pine needles or pine bark nuggets.
Spring:
Resolution #3: Plant a square foot vegetable garden. Make Mel Bartholomew's soil mix which is compost, vermiculite and peat moss to keep weeds away.
Resolution #4: Know the frost date. Plan my garden, get the seeds and watch the calendar. No procrastinating- last year I missed the date for planting tomatoes and didn't have a good crop.
Resolution #5: Check the ph balance of the soil. The raised garden bed will have new soil (compost, vermiculite and peat moss) but for herbs, flowers and shrubs which will be planted in the ground, the acidity or alkaline values will determine which plants will thrive and where to plant them. The master gardeners say they take 5 samples from the yard to the Coop Extension for testing.
Resolution #6: Plant blueberry bushes and plan cover with good quality mulch (my mother says that's the secret to getting gallons of blueberries). Use compost from last year's fall leaves and discarded plants and foods. Some experts say the compost process can be done in just a few weeks. We'll see.
Summer:
Resolution #7: No matter what, no chemicals. Incentive: keep my food pure, my dog healthy and won't pollute the storm water. Vow to use organic fertilizer, improve quality of the soil, weed- control landscape fabric and cayenne pepper around garden for pest control.
Resolution #8: Produce more tomatoes. The upside down tomato plant on the deck needs lime and extra watering to produce more tomatoes. Check out tips from the experts.
Resolution #9: Plant a flower bed that I can see from my office. See how I like the different colors and textures as suggested by landscape experts.
Autumn:
Resolution #10: Expand my leaf management skills. Will learn new ways to cheat at raking and will let you know. Last year, I used pond netting (the smaller size is easy to handle) under my big red maple tree to catch the leaves. It took less than 5 minutes to secure netting and a few days later, less than 10 minutes to haul off the leaves. Love trees, hate to rake.
Resolution #11: Keep squirrels away from newly planted bulbs using netting as a barrier. My neighbor put down deer netting (secured with landscape staples) this year to cover up her tulips so the squirrels wouldn't be able to dig up the bulbs. Squirrels can be a challenge; they dig up stuff and eat all the bird food and that's getting expensive.
