Hanging Gourd Pots
Create these little gourd hanging pots, perfect for herbs or flowers.
Start with a 6 inch clean hard shell gourd. Hard shell gourds can be found locally at Farmer's Markets, at Gourd Farms or online. Visit the American Gourd Society's web page for a gourd grower in your state www.americangourdsociety.com. Using a jigsaw or a sharp knife cut the top off the gourd, turning the gourd into a bowl. Remove any seeds and gourd "guts", from inside the gourd.
I like to use a leather dye to color the gourd pots. Fiebing is a leather dye that is available in craft stores, leather shops and shoe repair stores. A little goes a long way. Apply with the applicator that comes with the dye, one small area at a time. I like to use a piece of lamb's wool to rub the color evenly over the surface of the gourd. Wear protective gloves when working with the leather dye, as the dye will stain your hands and anything else it comes in contact with.
The gourd hanging pots can also be painted using acrylic paint. Paint all in one color or decorate with flowers, shapes or designs of your choice. Acrylic flowers or designs can also be painted over the leather dyed gourd pot for an interesting effect.
When the gourd pot is completely either spray or brush on a clear acrylic finish. Choose either a high gloss finish or a matte finish. It's a matter of preference. If the pot is going outdoors, I prefer the brush on finish. Allow to dry completely.
Using a sharp pointed knife or scissors make three holes in the bottom for drainage. Next cut two or three holes, 1" from the top around the sides of the gourd. String the pot for hanging using leather cord, (even leather shoe strings), jute, twine or string. The type of hanging cord makes a big difference in the look and style of the pot.
Traditionally I use brown type leather dyes and tan or brown leather hangers for my herbs. I have used blue or turquoise colored dye with funky colored and textured knitting wool to make hanging gourd pots for Johnny jump up's in the spring. Or red dye and green and red yard for holding pine and holly arrangements for Christmas.
The hanging gourd pots hold up well outdoors and last a year or longer. They are easy and fun to make, no two are ever alike, and they make a great gift.
