How to Build a Raised Garden Bed
A raised garden bed is a garden built on top of your native soil and is usually contained within wood or stone structures. But how do you build one? With these simple step by step instructions you'll have your very own in no time.
1. Location, Location, Location:
Select a location that you can live with because once its down, you will not want to move it. That's not to say you can't but it will just be too hard that you probably won't want to. Also make sure the location you choose gets suitable sunlight daily. You don't want to put your garden bed where there is more shade than sun. Makes sense, right? Plants can't grow without sun.
2. Decide the size and shape of your garden:
Pick a size and shape that is easy for you to access without having to walk through the garden bed. Remember, one of the highlights of using a garden bed is because the soil doesn't get compacted. That's what will allow you to use that same soil year after year. Just keep that in mind when going with a certain size and shape.
3. Lay the groundwork:
Go ahead and just lay down some landscape fabric, newspaper, or cardboard. Doing this will smother the soil below and prevent the problem of weeds coming up in your garden later. This also will give your garden the proper drainage. Don't use black plastic here as it does not drain properly.
4. Construct your bed:
Your going to want to use lumber here that is rot-resistant or over time you will need to replace it. Its best to use something like cedar or redwood. Its your choice though. We'll go with a four by eight foot garden bed for this step since its the most common one. You're going to want to use two by six inch treated lumber for this and will need three pieces. One of those pieces you will cut in half and those will serve as the width pieces. The other two will serve as the length pieces. Now to put these together you will have 3 options. The first option is to butt them together at each corner and then screw those corners together with galvanized screws. The second option is to use either a small piece of wood or a stake and attach each side by screw to it. The third option would be to use galvanized "L" brackets and that will allow you to attach the sides together. Whatever way you choose though will work fine.
NOTE: While I just described how to build a four by eight foot garden bed out of lumber, you don't have to use that. You can use stone, concrete blocks, bricks, or whatever. As long as your soil is contained than you're good to go.
5. Use a leveler:
This is to ensure that all sides are even all the way around. If its uneven than just remove some of the soil underneath to make it even. Having a uneven garden bed can make it where you drown some plants because the water will just all go to one place and sit.
6. Fill your garden:
You will now fill your garden with topsoil, compost, and some manure (if you choose).
7. Rake your garden:
This is to make sure the soil is level and ready to go for you plants.
8. Planting time:
This is the best step of all because you have finished constructing and its now time for you to plant your seeds.
