A good place to start is by cleaning up any stacks of lumber, tree limbs or trash on the premises near any of your buildings or your home. Tall grass or weeds need to be mowed down and cleaned up. Check around windows and doors on your home or other buildings for cracks and gaps. Replace any weather stripping that has become old and shrunken, leaving gaps. Not only is this good practice for energy saving purposes, but will help to occlude mice as well.
If pet foods or wild birdseed are stored outdoors in carports or garages, they need to be kept in metal containers that can be tightly sealed. Plastic containers are not always a good choice.
The next step is vital to the success of keeping out mice. It has worked for me for more than three decades so I know it works. It must be done very carefully to keep from missing anything. One room at a time should be inspected for any opening at all, even a tiny crack. Look inside closets and check the inside walls for cracks or holes. Check along the tops and bottoms of walls for cracks in every room. Check along the edges of carpet and in corners for cracks that go into openings between walls.
Look for tiny cracks and openings along window and door facings, around electrical outlets and plates, around light fixtures and ceiling fans. Check the top and bottom edges of baseboards. In kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, look around water pipes where they go into walls or floors, especially under sinks and cabinets. Look for outlets around hot water heaters and clothes dryer vents. Be sure the vents have working flap-covers. Check behind cabinets and around openings to crawlspaces. Inspect the spaces around shelves and corners in pantries and storage rooms.
For sizeable openings, use caulking, boards or some sturdy, solid material to cover them up and secure them tightly. Use a screwdriver or similar tool to stuff steel wool tightly into cracks and crevices. Do not use scouring pads for this job. They will crumble and fall out of the cracks and crevices in a short time and the whole job will have been done in vain. Get the rolls of longer fiber steel wool in the bags. It is not expensive, is more durable and will go farther for the job at hand. It can be purchased at building supply stores or at Walmart stores.
Once the repairs are made with coverings and steel wool, a decision must be made about getting rid of mice you may already have in your house or other buildings. Mice reproduce rapidly so, if you have only one male and one female, that is too many. You may want to trap the mice yourself, or you may want to call one of the pest control services in your area. When you have gotten rid of them, you will then have good mouse control since there is no opening where mice can enter your buildings. An occasional check on the places you have repaired will make sure all is still secure. Your problems with mouse droppings, urine stains, exposure to diseases and other destruction are over.
