How to Keep Cats Away from Houseplants
It is a well-known fact that cats do whatever they want, despite what we do or say to make them act otherwise. This is especially true when they eat our houseplants and/or use them for a litter box.
These actions frighten and aggravate us at turns, mainly because we know that the plant they are so insistently chewing on is undoubtedly poisonous. Believe it or not, there is method behind the madness to cats eating plants. No, it's not just to annoy you!
The main reason cats eat plants is because it is a substitute for eating grass. Grass induces vomiting and -- while you don't want to clean this up either -- it is a necessary evil. Regurgitation rids cats bodies of painful hairballs that accumulate over time. Because cats can't just force themselves to throw up, they resort to the first green thing they see: your houseplant. It doesn't matter if it is poisonous (see a full list here), it is their instinct to seek out some sort of grass or plant.
The reason they dig in the dirt or use your hapless plant for a litter box? They just like getting their feet in the dirt. It is a welcome distraction from their ordinary activities.
There are multiple ways to combat this behavior. This can involve keeping a spray-bottle at the ready for whenever Kitty moves towards the houseplants. Obviously, you can't be home all the time, so another option is to purchase spray repellants from a pet store or veterinarian. Spraying the plants with these repellants should make your cat stay away. A homemade alternative to this is to mix lemon juice with water and spritz the mixture over your plants.
Cats especially dislike citrus, so to keep them from digging, placing citrus peelings in the dirt of your plant is a good option. Other remedies are to sprinkle powdered ginger or cayenne pepper in the dirt around your plant.
Purdue University offered this tip to keep pets out of plant dirt:
"You can enhance the effectiveness of your rock mulch by first cutting a circle of screen wire or weed fabric the same diameter as your pot. Cut an X or hole/slit for your plant to fit through. Then cover the screen barrier with rock, crushed marble, or pea gravel. This is a pretty effective barrier for digging, but it may not curb destruction of plant materials."
Besides doing all these things, there is an option to curb your cat's grass cravings and potentially distract him from your houseplants. Buy special grasses for cats to chew on, which can be found at pet supply stores. These could include parsley, sage, thyme and lavender. Another option would be to make your cat his own little garden. Growing flats of catnip or other assorted grasses is a wonderful option that keeps both of you happy.
To acclimate your cat to the garden, let him know that it is just for him/her. Wave the leaves in front of their noses or put treats inside the garden to entice them to it. Though all these are options, it may take some time to find the perfect combination for your cat. Every cat is different with their own little quirks. What works for some may not work for others. So experiment! Just so long as things end with you, your cat and your houseplants being happy, that's all that matters.
