Heathcote Botanical Gardens Review
An urban garden in Ft. Pierce, Florida featuring a Japanese garden, rainforest garden, native plant garden, butterfly garden, herb garden, and meditation garden.
Heathcote Botanical Gardens opened in 1985 in hopes of preserving a bit of nature in the quickly developing city of Fort Pierce. Today the gardens are an urban retreat on five acres of land just east of US1. Heathcote is comprised of several themed gardens including native and exotic plants. Admission is only $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $2 for kids six to twelve, and free for children under six. There are also special membership rates and occasional free admission Fridays throughout the summer. Expect to spend one to two hours exploring the gardens at a leisurely pace.
My husband and I arrived at Heathcote on the morning of Friday, August 13th and were greeted in the parking lot by a black cat. This could be considered a bad omen, but the cat was friendly and I was in too good a mood to be troubled by superstitions. As we entered the small gift shop we were greeted by several pleasant ladies who gave us a map and told us a bit about the garden trails. This was a free Friday, but the women told us they would gladly accept donations. There was also a separate donation bucket for the four cats that call Heathcote home.
We began our botanical adventure on the west side. Landscaped trees and plants surrounded the wide, mulch covered trails. I was rather disappointed by the lack of tall shrubbery along the fence line to block the sights and sounds of the nearby road. We walked among the crotons, palms, cycads, ferns, and bromeliads. The bromeliads were gorgeous, although I would have liked to see a larger variety of species represented. The small butterfly garden was lovely, but the butterflies were hiding today. A replica of an 1880's Florida pioneer home sits toward the back of the property, complete with a miniature pineapple plantation.
The serene gardens on the east side are the highlight of Heathcote. Travel up the stone steps, past a pond, and over a bridge to view the lilies, bougainvillea, ficus, and bonsai trees of the Japanese Garden. The Reflection Garden features a sitting area overlooking a whirlpool pond. Tropical trees form a shaded canopy along the trail that leads to a greenhouse filled with orchids and bromeliads. Walk under an archway to find the Mediterranean Herb Garden. The sweet scents of basil, rosemary, lemongrass, mint, and allspice made us hungry. With our botanical tour complete, we headed home for lunch.
